SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. - The SMWC Hunt Seat equestrian team kicked off the season this past weekend at home. The Pomeroys finished the weekend one point behind longtime Regional Champs, Purdue University. The team won Saturday on a tiebreaker and finished a strong third behind Butler and Purdue in the Sunday show.
The Open division held down the fort this weekend with freshman Taylor Valencia leading the charge, putting in three top-two finishes. Senior and team captain Karlee Reagan rode smart and strong bringing home three top-three finishes. Sophomore and 2018 National Finalist Carl Arnold worked hard all weekend to pull out the second place in the flat on Sunday.
The lone Intermediate rider Kathryn Kraft turned in a stunning IHSA debut performance, coming back from a rough first ride to finish in the top three on three separate occasions this weekend. She cumulated a tie for Reserve High Point Rider on Sunday.
Novice riders Violet Hoyes, Morgan Nobbe, Jourdan May, and Kathryn Deitsch showed strong, pulling in six top two rides over the weekend. Junior Morgan Nobbe fought hard fought for two blue ribbons on Saturday making her the High Point Rider for the show. Junior Jourdan May qualified for Regionals in Novice flat and will join Kraft in Intermediate for the remainder of the season.
Beginning and Advanced Walk Trot Canterers were also excellent with all six riders claiming at least one top-three finish over the weekend. Senior Kindra Gingerich and freshman Boston Campbell both nabbed a blue. First-year team members as upperclassmen alike all rode smart and correct.
In true Woodsie tradition, Walk Trot riders brought it home with four very smart rides. We are especially proud of first-year team member Emily Hansen earning the first place in her debut performance.
The SMWC Hunt Seat team will be back in action at home on November 17-18th.
