SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College head men's cross country coach Zach Whitkanack is proud to announce the signing of Jacob Turner.
"We are very excited to welcome Jacob Turner as the first men's cross country runner for Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College," stated coach Whitkanack at Friday's signing. "Jacob has all the traits that are going to be necessary for building this new program. He is a hard worker, mature and a natural leader. I think that Jacob has a lot of potential to grow as a student-athlete over his four years at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College."
Turner, who will graduate from West Vigo High School, will be the cornerstone for the new program as he becomes SMWC's first male cross country runner. Not only is Turner a strong student, but he is a quality runner with room to grow. He began running cross country as a sophomore at WVHS and has a 5k PR of 18:19. Along with Turner's abilities in cross country, he has recently taken up running triathlons with Illiana Multisport where he has qualified for nationals.
"It feels great to be the first one to sign with this new program," stated Turner. "It's a humbling experience to be a part of. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for my family, friends and coaches."
Men's cross country was added to SMWC's sport offerings back in March of 2016 and the first season of competition will take place in the fall of 2017. The Pomeroys will run as a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. Cross Country will be the second men's team on campus after men's golf begins this year.
Turner plans to major in nursing and is the son of Mark Turner and Tammi Rankins. "I am very excited about being with SMWC, and I can't really put it into words on how excited I am," added Turner.
