SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. (Men and Women's Cross Country) – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men and women cross country programs have released their 2017 schedule for Pomeroy fans to ready themselves.
This season marks another milestone in the history of SMWC athletics as another male sport is added in men's cross country. The program was announced in 2016 and Coach Zach Whitkanack has been building his team for this moment.
"Everyone involved with Pomeroy Cross Country is excited to see what is in store for the men's program this fall. A lot of questions remain about what the inaugural season has in store for us but the team is working extremely hard," stated Whitkanack, "They have bonded very well and it is going to be a truly team effort this fall to get the program off to a fast start. Coach Ballenger and I are ready to see what this season brings after a long year of recruiting."
As the men's team looks to start off the season strong, the Pomeroy women seek to continue their amazing run to the top of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA). The team capped off last season with a ninth place finish out of 22 teams at the USCAA National Championship. SMWC also placed three runners (Cheyenn Wright, Corrissa Proctor, and Sarah Wichman) in the top 50 from the field of 159. The ninth place finish was one spot higher than their 2015 finish at the championship.
"I look for the women's team to be much improved over last season. We return five of six runners from last year's squad and have brought in five very talented freshmen. Our goal for the season is a top three finish at the USCAA National meet," asserted Coach Whitkanack.
Both programs have several runners for SMWC fans to pay attention to, according to Whitkanack. On the women's side, Wright, the experienced senior and freshmen Kendyll Schulz seem to be the front runners but there are numerous others who can do battle for the other three scoring spots. For the men, it is too early to tell but the top runners look to be junior Jordan Love and freshmen Brady Love and Ethan Collins.
To open the 2017 campaign, the Pomeroys have three meets in September. SMWC will travel to Shelbyville, Ind. to compete in the Sodexo Grizzly Invitational, hosted by Franklin College on Sept. 2. The teams continue on the road to West Lafayette, Ind. for the Indiana Cross Country Intercollegiate meet on Sept. 15 at 3:30 p.m. To end September, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods heads to Decatur, Ill. for the H.W. Wright Classic held by Millikin University on Sept. 29 at 6 p.m.
The Pomeroys season continues at the Bradley Pink Classic in Peoria, Ill., hosted by Bradley University on Oct. 13 at 4:15 p.m. SMWC's last meet of October will be the St. Louis Fall Classic on Oct. 21 at 10 a.m. in St. Louis, Mo., hosted by the St. Louis College of Pharmacy.
On Nov. 2, the teams close out the regular season in Warrenville, Ill. for the North Central Red/White Open at 5 p.m., hosted by North Central College.
