TITUSVILLE, Fla. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team was swept by Reinhardt on Wednesday during day three of games at Chain of Lakes Park in Titusville, Fla. The Pomeroys started the doubleheader off by falling to RU, 8-0, in five innings. Game two was more of a thriller, as SMWC took NAIA #16 RU to nine innings before falling 8-3.
The Pomeroys were only able to muster one hit in game one, which came via sophomore Hollie Jones. RU jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first two innings and then added three more runs in the fourth to hand SMWC the eight run rule loss.
The second game of the doubleheader was a much different story than game one. Junior Christian Chambers got the start and pitched the first four innings before being relieved in the fifth by sophomore Taylor Andrew. SMWC and RU were knotted up at zero through the first five innings with SMWC jumping on the scoreboard in the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, SMWC put two runs on the board via an RBI single by senior Marlee Yeager that scored sophomore Baylee Waters and a throwing error by RU that allowed senior Emma Riffe to score. RU then didn't waste time knotting the game back up with two runs in the top of the seventh to force extra innings.
The eighth inning saw RU score one run first with SMWC then answering via a double by Yeager to score Jones. With the score tied at 3-3, RU would steal the victory in the top of the ninth with a grand slam to seal the victory and move SMWC to 3-3 on the year. Riffe and Yeager both went 2-for-4 in game two and both recorded a double, while Yeager was responsible for two of the Pomeroys' three runs.
SMWC will be back in action tomorrow when they face Penn State Hazleton at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
