TITUSVILLE, Fla. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team swept Penn State Hazleton on Thursday with scores of 10-0 and 6-1 to improve to 5-3 on the year.
The Pomeroys scored 10 runs on 11 hits in game one to get their fourth victory of the season after five innings of work. Sophomores Hollie Jones and Kindra Gingerich and senior Camille Ulery all went 2-for-3, with Ulery recording her second home run of the season and finishing the game with five RBIs.
SMWC put up six runs in the first and then finished the game off with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, while keeping PSU Hazleton off the scoreboard. Sophomore Taylor Andrew pitched four innings and allowed just one hit, while striking out five batters. Junior Christian Chambers pitched the fifth inning to seal the shutout.
The Pomeroys took their time in game two, spreading out six runs over the course of seven innings to earn the sweep and improve to 4-0 against USCAA opponents in Florida this week. SMWC scored one run in the first, second and third innings to jump out to a 3-0 lead. PSU Hazleton then scored one run in the fifth before SMWC closed the game out with two runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh.
The Pomeroys recorded 10 hits with junior Kerri Schrock going 2-for-2 with one RBI and senior Breanna Lange going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Jones scored three runs for the Pomeroys, while junior Jacklyn McClain scored two runs and Lange scored one run.
Senior Stephanie Richardson went the first three innings before Chambers finished the game's final four innings. The two combined to allow just six hits in seven innings of work.
The Pomeroys will finish out their Florida spring break with a doubleheader against Iowa Wesleyan tomorrow at Chain of Lakes Park.
