SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team went 2-0 on day one of the SMWC Softball Classic on Saturday. The two victories improve SMWC's overall record to 16-4 on the year.
The Pomeroys defeated Robert Morris – Springfield 12-2 in game one of the day and then took down Cleary in game two, 4-2.
The Pomeroys came out strong in game one vs. RMU Springfield with 14 hits and 12 runs. Sophomore Hollie Jones went 3-for-4 with one RBI and scored two runs, while junior Kerri Schrock went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and scored two runs. Sophomore Taylor Andrew also dominated at the plate with a perfect 3-for-3 performance that included one double and three RBI.
Andrew also picked up the win with seven strikeouts through four innings of work, surrendering just three hits.
SMWC got the bulk of its runs in the first inning with seven and then tacked on two in the second inning, one in the third and two in the fourth.
Game two was more of thriller than game one with the Pomeroys trailing 2-0 all the way until the bottom of the seventh. The Pomeroys hadn't been able to get anything going offensively and were looking at potentially falling to USCAA foe Cleary 2-0 after a couple of mishaps in the first gave CU the early lead.
With the Pomeroys at bat in the bottom of the seventh, senior Emma Riffe gave SMWC a spark with a double that was then followed by a fielder's choice by senior Camille Ulery that ended up having both Riffe and Ulery be safe on second and third. Senior Marlee Yeager then sent a shot right at third base that went between the third basemen's legs to scored Riffe and pinch runner freshman Lisa Scott and tie the game at two.
Then looking to avoid extra innings, Schrock sent a shot over the left field fence for a walk-off home run to end the game and give SMWC the sweep on day one of the SMWC Softball Classic.
Day two of the classic will begin tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. and will feature a rematch of SMWC vs. Cleary followed by SMWC and RMU Springfield at 2 p.m.
