AKRON, Ohio (Softball) – The St. Mary-of-the-Woods College Pomeroys came out with their guns blazing in the team's first game of the 2017 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Softball National Championship on Monday night. SMWC soundly defeated the University of Cincinnati-Clermont in five innings to the tune of 12-0.
The defending national champion Pomeroys flexed their skills on the diamond and stacked ten runs on to UC-Clermont in just the first two innings. Kerri Schrock carried the heaviest bat for Saint Mary-of-the-Woods as she went 3-3 at the plate. Third basemen, Marlee Yeager kept Pomeroy players crossing home plate with four runs batted in. Yeager and Camille Ulery collected two home runs on the night. The top base runner of the game was Hollie Jones as she swiped two bases.
In the circle, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods pitching corps was stellar. Christian Chambers snapped up the win for SMWC with one inning pitched for no hits, no runs, and two strikeouts. Taylor Andrews pitched the most innings for the Pomeroys with three innings pitched for one hit, no runs, and three strikeouts. Not to be outdone, Stephanie Richardson pitched one inning for two hits and one strikeout.
Cincinnati-Clermont's Regan Inlow suffered the loss facing six batters for three hits, six runs, and two walks.
SMWC advances to play #5 Penn State Brandywine tomorrow evening at 4 p.m. UC-Clermont falls to the elimination bracket and will face SUNY-Canton at noon.
