Softball Blasts the Fighting Saints and Pummels NAIA Foe

TITUSVILLE, Fla. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team concluded its Florida contests this morning against the College of St. Joseph and Ave Maria University. The Pomeroys stole both games as they defeated the Fighting Saints 20-3 and Ave Maria 4-2.


GAME ONE | VS. COLLEGE OF ST. JOSEPH | WON 20-3

SMWC blasted the College of St. Joseph 20-3. The Pomeroys secured the victory thanks to 12 runs in the first inning. The route was led by Kelsey Young, Kelly Combs, Malerie Higginbotham, Taylor Andrew, Mariah Stout, and Hollie Jones who each crossed the plate and earned RBIs. The Woods tacked on eight more runs throughout the game. Young earned the victory in the circle for the Pomeroys. She lasted five innings, allowed eight hits and three runs while she struck out one batter. Jenna Crowley sustained the loss for the College of St. Joseph. SMWC collected 11 hits. Baylee Waters, Stout, Young, and Jacklyn McClain all managed multiple hits for the team. Waters led the club with three hits in four at-bats. The defense continued to play flawlessly and did not commit an error.


GAME TWO | VS. AVE MARIA UNIVERSITY | WON 4-2

SMWC jumped out to an early lead over the NAIA Ave Maria University and took home a 4-2 victory.  The Woods knotted the game up at one in the bottom of the first inning when the team scored one run when Baylee Waters doubled. The Pomeroys pulled away for good with three runs in the second inning when Kindra Gingerich singled on a 2-0 count, scoring one run and Hollie Jones doubled on a 2-0 count which scored two runs. Taylor Andrew earned the win for the Woods. She surrendered two runs on three hits over seven innings and struck out two batters. Briana Gieger took the loss for Ave Maria University. SMWC totaled nine hits in the game. Waters and Jones each had two hits to lead SMWC.

The SMWC softball team will be back on the diamond Wednesday, March 14th against Indiana University-Northwest. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
