LEGENDS Way, Fla. - The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team opened its 2019 season with Spring Training games in Florida. The Pomeroys took on 80+ degree heat and two NAIA opponents. Unfortunately, they lost both contests but there were many positive takeaways on the day. SMWC will have the opportunity to redeem themselves at 9:00 AM tomorrow morning as they take on Missouri Baptist University.
Game #1 | vs. Saint Ambrose University
The Pomeroys witnessed the game slip away early and could not recover in a 7-0 loss to Saint Ambrose University. SAU took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. SMWC struggled to get the bats going and had a tough time to put runs on the board. They struggled defensively as they committed three errors. SAU capitalized on this tallying six more runs throughout the game. Senior Taylor Andrew was in the pitcher's circle for The Woods. She lasted three and a third innings, allowing seven hits and five runs while striking out two. Brooke Coffing stepped in and threw three and two-thirds innings in relief. Camryn Scott led the team with two hits in three at-bats.
Game #2 | vs. Indiana University – South Bend
SMWC scored in the first inning when Ariel Spivey drove in Hollie Jones on a single. Katelynn Kennedy got the call to start in the pitcher's circle for the Pomeroys; this was her first contest back since Tommy John surgery last fall. She struck out six batters, surrendered four runs on eight hits over a six-inning stretch. Hollie Jones and Spivey each collected one hit to lead the team. The Pomeroys lost by the score 4-2.
Quote | Head Coach Mike Andrew
On how he felt the team performed on Day One…
"The first game you could tell we were very nervous and that forced us to commit many errors. In Game Two we played a lot better. All in all, not too bad for not getting outdoors and our competition had already played a dozen games."
On Katelynn Kennedy's first start since Tommy John surgery…
"Kennedy threw very well for her first time seeing the mound after surgery."
Quote | Katelynn Kennedy
On what it felt like to be back on the field playing with her team and getting her first strikeout.
"It felt good to be back out on the field with all of my teammates. The first K of the game felt routine and natural."
On how her arm felt during her six innings…
"My arm is doing pretty well and I'm excited to see what is in store for the team this season."
