SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. (Women's Basketball) – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Pomeroy women's basketball team opened their 2017-18 campaign against the Lady Bearcats of Brescia University (2-0) on Saturday afternoon. SMWC (0-1) fought valiantly but couldn't keep pace with Brescia and was defeated 100-89.
"I was very pleased with our effort tonight," stated SMWC Athletic Director and basketball head coach Deanna Bradley. "If we continue to work this hard, good things will happen."
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College was led by Callan Taylor with 24 points and Maggie Reimer with 16. Not to be outdone, freshman Regan Hubbard racked up 12 points. The offensive initiator for SMWC was Delaney Kendall as she dished out five assists for the day. Sydney Ingram was the rebound machine for the Pomeroys as she grabbed 11 boards for the game.
As a team, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College ended the game going 29 percent from the field, 18.6 percent from the arc, and 75 percent from the free throw line.
Princess Holloway was the leader for the Lady Bearcats with 25 points. She was followed by Kelsey Kirkpatrick with 17 and Le'Onzerrae Grubbs with 12. Catherine Dunn, Alicia Salazar, and Angel Jeffries each contributed 10 points. The assist leader for Brescia was Dunn with six. Kirkpatrick had the stickiest hand as she came up with six steals and led the team in rebounds with 16.
Collectively, Brescia finished the game going 54.2 percent from the field, 40 percent from three points range, and 66.7 percent from the stripe.
SMWC will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 14 against Lincoln Christian University in the Hamilton Arena at the Jeanne Knoerle Sports and Recreation Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
