Pomeroy Volleyball Shines at USCAA Banquet

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (Women's Volleyball) – The United State Collegiate Athletic Association hosted the 2017 USCAA Fall Championship Banquet on Thursday night and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's volleyball came away with quite a few awards.

The Pomeroys had two student-athletes named to the USCAA All-Academic team. The lone senior Madeline Howes earned the award with a 3.93 GPA while McKenzi Kumpf earned the honor with a 3.91 GPA.

Gabriella Slagle earned Honorable Mention All-American honors with her play this season. Slagle has recorded 208 kills (2.29/set) and 77 blocks for the season.

Kumpf and Monica Mack earned USCAA 1st Team All-American honors with their play. Kumpf is fifth in the USCAA in kills with 321 (3.09/set), eighth in points with 372 (3.6/set), and 18th in digs with 332 (3.19/set. Mack is fourth in points with 399 (4.0/set), fourth in total blocks with 101 (1.00/set), sixth in kills with 315 (3.15/set), and eighth in hitting percentage with .388.

Head Coach Stephen Beeler came away with the USCAA Volleyball Coach of the Year award. Beeler has been with Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College volleyball since the inception in 2014 when he was named head coach. He has guided the Pomeroys to the USCAA National Tournament Runners Up for the past two seasons. This year was no different as SMWC picked up the second seed bid to the national competition.

The Pomeroys will continue pool play in the USCAA National Volleyball Tournament tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. against Penn State-Fayette and at 3:30 p.m. against Florida College. Friday at 5 p.m. also marks the beginning of single elimination play in the tournament.
