SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. -- In the second edition of This Week In Pomeroy Sports | TWIPS, we want to take a one moment and say Happy Labor Day! Due to the long weekend, we included today's contest (9.2.19) into the mix! Let's take a look at the scores/highlights of the week and all upcoming contests for SMWC athletics. From the men's and women's cross country programs taking first place in their season openers, to the women's volleyball season sweeping Blackburn College, we have it all below!

Catch-up on the Action

Men's & Women's Cross Country

For the second time in school history, both teams finished with first-place finishes in the same invitational! On Saturday, August 31, each program won the Principia Home Opener hosted by Principia College. The Pomeroys defeated Missouri Baptist University, St. Louis College of Pharmacy, Principia CollegeSt. Charles Community College, and Blackburn College. Both teams included freshmen competing in their first collegiate races (3 — Men's, 6 — Women's).

Leading the Woods was freshman Zoe Trausch and senior Brennan Guido. Trausch saw her first collegiate victory in the 4K race with a whopping time of 16:03.23. Guido picked up where he left off at USCAA Nationals last season; he finished 3rd with a 6K time of 21:21.95.

Head coach Zach Whitkanack stated "Both teams performed well. Brennan Guido did a nice job upfront for us. After Guido, we had a great four man pack led by Jacob Turner. The women's team had a great pack led by Zoe Trausch. I was very pleased with their performance."

Zoe Trausch was proud of her squad, "I was so excited to run beside my teammates for the first time. My teammates all ran incredibly well, and we were all able to push each other throughout the race. I can't wait to see how we improve as a team throughout the rest of the season."

Senior Brennan Guido believed the team ran good, "Great start to the seasonI was a tough course but we all ran well. I'm excited to see what is in store for the team this season."

Women's Volleyball

The women's volleyball team played in its season opener against NCAA Division III Blackburn College on Saturday, August 31. The Pomeroys served up a victory winning 3-0 (26-24, 25-15, 30-28) over the Beavers. Head coach Sean McMorrow picked up his first win as the leader of the SMWC volleyball program.

The Woods were led by returner Alexis Woodburn and freshman Jaelyn Fennell who both tallied nine kills. Katelynn Cotter picked up a whopping 82 assists while Pamela Dorman finished the three-set match with 16 digs.

Head coach Sean McMorrow was happy to pick up a win, "We are excited to open the season with a win against a much improved Blackburn team."

McMorrow added how well Katie Cotter and Alexis Woodburn played, "Our court leader and player of the gameKatie Cotter, helped turn the tide. After falling behind 13-1, we talked during a timeout, about the advantage we hold in certain matchups. After a couple of kills by Alexis WoodburnCotter executed a nine-point run from the service line, bringing the score to 19-20. The team never looked back."

Men's Soccer

The men's soccer team beat Eureka College today 6-0. With its victorySMWC improves to 2-0 on the year. The Pomeroys jumped out quickly and would not look back, they had goals from five player's. Omar Abdallah Nabilsi finished the game with two goals.

Head coach Abe Tizaf was excited about the win, "I am very thrilled for our second win this season. It started a bit tough but we got more ball possession and that helped us. As always, we always have more to improve in the future, but happy for the entire team for today's win."

Women's Soccer

The women's soccer team traveled crosstown to take on Rose-Hulman Institue of Technology. Historically, the Pomeroys have not faired well against the Engineers' and on Friday, August 30th, there would not be an outlier. SMWC dropped the contest 5-0.

Nonetheless, tonight women's soccer got back on track with an enormous victory over Eureka College! The Woods routed the Red Devils 7-0, six players scored for the Pomeroys. Carra Matherly scored two goals to lead the team.

SMWC women's soccer is now 1-2 on the season.

Head coach Craig Hendry believed his team played well, "We played quite well at times but we need to learn to be patient and make better decisions. There were occasions in the first half when we tried to force it through, rather than shifting it to the other side. We did better on this in the second half. All in all, we had decent performances all over the field today."

Men's Golf

The men's golf team officially started its 2019 season on Friday/Saturday as they battled in the two-day Culver's Edgewood College Fall Invitational. The Pomeroys finished in 4th Place while two players snagged Top 10 accolades; Colton Kuppler grabbed 6th place (+5) and Nathan Higbie took 9th (+6).

Head coach Abe Nasser was proud of his team. "The guys played very well on a difficult golf course. The greens were very fast and unforgiving. I'm very happy with the result no matter where it places us."

Women's Golf

SMWC finished 8th out of nine teams at the State Line Shootout. This was the Pomeroys season opener and on day one the team had to shake the rust off. Overall, Ali Bazzani led the team with a two day total of 178. That placed her in a tie for 14th in the 61 player field. It was also her individual two days best score. After day one we were bunched with five teams, but we were unable to improve our position on day two. Other scores were as follows.
