Catch-up on the Action

Western Equestrian

The western equestrian team kicked off the 2019 season traveling to New Castle, Indiana, to take on Division I Purdue University. Results have not been submitted but looking at the history, SMWC was likely one of the top competitors at the two-day show.

Women's Golf

The women's golf team traveled to Ada, Michigan, on Tuesday, September 24th. The Pomeroys finished fourth at the Grace College Invitational. The Woods finished with a team score of 383. Senior Alexandria Bazzani led the team with an 84, followed by Cassidy Thompson (97) and Kiersten Mikesell (98). Shaylyn Ehrlich (104), Jessena Goddard (117), and Ashley Wells (132) rounded out the rest of the team scores.

Head Coach Steve Higham said, "Ali had a great day with a 6th place [overall] finish, but big numbers on a few holes held us back. We [look forward to] next Tuesday at Iowa Wesleyan."

Men's Soccer

The men's soccer team (8-2) saw three contests this week. They finished 2-1 behind a huge win against Welch College 6-1, a double-overtime victory versus Franklin College 3-2, and a loss to Moody Bible Institute 2-4.

Versus Welch College, SMWC bounced back from its first loss of the season (Webster University) in dominating fashion with a 6-1 win over the Flames. The Pomeroys scoring attack was led by hat tricks from Omar Abdallah Nabilsi and Edson Alvarado.

Against Franklin College, the Pomeroys found themselves down 2-0 early, surrendering two quick goals in the 20th and 22nd minute. The Woods rallied back in the 40th minute with a goal from Omar Abdallah Nabilsi who later scored the equalizer in the 65th minute before a golden goal header from Edson Alvarado sealed the win.

Facing Moody Bible Institute, the Woods suffered its second loss of the season 2-4, with the loss, SMWC moves to 8-2-0 (.800).

After the loss, head coach Abe Tizaf had this message for his team, "The one thing I have to say is that we totally deserve this loss. Moody played a lot better than we did, and they deserve this win. This just shows how much work we have ahead of us and we need to continue working harder to improve for the upcoming games."

Women's Soccer

Women's soccer (5-5) played two contests this week against Welch College and Fontbonne University. After the Welch College 8-1 victory, the Pomeroys are off to their best start since 2013.

Versus Welch College, SMWC won by the final score 8-1. The Pomeroys had goals from four separate player's (Alicia LombardoMadison StuckKennedee Lamb, and Melisa Spognardi). The Woods offense clicked on all cylinders and was very unselfish as they had six player's notch an assist (Spognardi, Makayla StuckKortney Buckley, Lombardo, Lamb, and Alexis Pflum).

Against Fontbonne University,  women's soccer could not match the Griffins offensive attack. They lost 4-2. Alicia Lombardo and Lanee Andrew scored the only goals for the Pomeroys. With the loss, SMWC sits at .500 on the season.

Softball

Softball launched its 2019 Fall Ball season against Indiana State University and Ball State University. The Woods was competitive versus the NCAA Divison I schools, scores are not reported as they are exhibition contests.

However, the team will be discovering its new identity under head coach Jennifer Cassell and the new faces in the program. Notable returners for the Pomeroys include pitcher Katelynn Kennedy, catcher Ariel Spivey, shortstop Hailey Miller, first baseman Kelsey Young, and second baseman Jilliann Reese.

Women's Volleyball

The women's volleyball team played in three home contests this past week. SMWC finished 1-2 as they were swept by #1 NAIA Missouri Baptist University (0-3), lost a close five-set match to Illinois Tech (2-3), and got back on track sweeping Calumet College of St. Joseph (3-0).

Versus Missouri Baptist, SMWC fell 3-0. The final score does not accurately tell the story of the game as the Pomeroys kept all three sets close, even leading for much of the third set. Mandi Alspach led the team in kills with 9, Katelyn Cotter in assists with 21, and Pamela Dorman in digs with 11.

Against Illinois Tech, the Pomeroys lost to 2-3 in a brutal five-set match. SMWC was locked in a tight contest for most of the game before running out of steam in the final two sets. SMWC had no shortage of offensive firepower, but a few mistakes eventually cost SMWC as they dropped 3 straight sets.

Facing Calumet College of St. Joseph, SMWC got back to its winning way as they dominated Calumet College of St. Joseph. The Pomeroys swept CCSJ 3-0 (25-11, 25-8, 25-12) to earn its fifth win of the 2019 campaign. SMWC was led by Jaelyn Fennell who tallied nine kills on 15 swings; she hit a whopping .553 %.

On the year, the Woods sits at 4-8 (.333) with 16 matches remaining in the 2019 campaign.
