Indoor Track & Field Amped Up To Begin Inaugural Season

SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – Men's and women's indoor track & field is geared up to begin its inaugural season at the Robert H. Johnson Some Little Giant Open on Saturday, December 7th. The invitational is hosted at the Knowling Fieldhouse/Johnson Indoor Track, in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

Field events will begin at 12:00 p.m. ET and running events start at 1:00 p.m. ET.

"I am excited about the first indoor track & field meet. It has been a long process of recruiting and I am looking forward to getting started. I think we will see some really strong individual performances," said Head Coach Zach Whitkanack.

"This meet will give us a good idea of areas we need to recruit for next year and what areas we need to work on this season," added Coach Whitkanack.

First-year Assistant Coach Gage Rayman is excited to see what his group can do from a competitive standpoint, "What I'm looking forward the most to this first meet is finally getting out there after three long months of training and seeing the results of all the hours of hard work pay off," said Coach Rayman.

"This first meet sets our program amazingly. It is a blank slate for the athletes and team and we can only grow and improve from these marks. I really believe we have a special group here that will provide an amazing foundation for the team and for the future if SMWC track & field," added Coach Rayman.

Craig Gillaspy, the Assistant Coach (Jumps) is ready to see his jumpers, jump, "I just look forward to actually getting the jumpers actually jumping." He added, " We have been doing a lot of conditioning but because of weather, we have not jumped yet so just seeing how they will respond to the collegiate competition and a new coach working with them on their jumps should be good for both them and me," said Coach Gillaspy.

Gillaspy believes Alicia Lombardo has the opportunity to compete well in the long jump, "I think Lombardo has the potential to do really well in the long jump. We are changing Pruits approach in the high jump so we will have to see how she responds but this will give us something to work off."

Assistant Coach (Sprints) Jaynard Keys knows his sprinters are ready for their first challenge, "I expect every student-athlete to come out and display his or her talent. Each athlete has their own special strengths and abilities, and I know once combined as a TEAM, we will work together and excel."

"Each and every athlete has put in the time and effort to prepare themselves for this meet. I know that everyone (coaches included) are ecstatic for our first meet Saturday," stated Coach Keys.

"This first meet marks a new era for this program. The possibilities are endless. With it being the first year for this sport, I believe it will show everyone that we have the talent and ability to compete with any other college or university. It is only up from here. The sky is the limit," added Coach Keys.
