Back-to-Back; Men's Golf Captures Second Straight USCAA National Title

Back-to-Back; Men's Golf Captures Second Straight USCAA National Title

STATE COLLEGE, Penn. - Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) men's golf has done it again! The team captured its second straight USCAA Men's Golf National Championship today behind a remarkable team performance!

One year after SMWC claimed its first USCAA National Title in program history, the team returned to State College on a mission...to win back-to-back Championships. With a narrow two-stroke victory over SUNY Delhi, the Pomeroys were untouched.

Head coach Abe Nasser is extremely proud of this group, "Today was a roller coaster. We started off bad, brought it back in the middle, and then finished strong to win. It was as close as it gets with just a few holes to play. We needed birdies to finish and we got them from Kuppler, Higbie, Grimes, and Wilson. Each one of our players continued to grind all day."

One message Nasser has ingrained in the team's head, "Every shot counts...today we won by two shots. I could not be happier with their focus and intestinal fortitude. This was truly a team win."

Colton Kuppler was named USCAA Individual National Champion with a score of 69 (-3). Kuppler, finished as Runner-Up last year which left him hungry to finish his senior campaign on top. He blazed through the competition to earn the second Individual Championship of his career. Not only did Kuppler accomplish this goal, but he was also named USCAA Men's Golf Student-Athlete of the Year, USCAA National All-Academic and First Team USCAA All-American.

Kuppler who swept every men's golf major award said, "It's a huge honor being my senior year. Obviously, I wanted to finish strong since last year I got second place. Last year I was close...finished in second place so I wanted to win this tournament one more time to end my college career. Also, getting Student-Athlete of the Year for the USCAA, I didn't expect that so it was a huge honor too."

Nasser has bittersweet feelings knowing Kuppler will not be returning next season, "Colton Kuppler won the individual title for the second time in three years. He is a special talent and SMWC is fortunate to have him as a part of our institution. We come to expect this from him. His ability and character as a student-athlete should not be taken for granted. All in all, this was a special day of golf to be a part of for this coach. It is fitting that we send these seniors who started this program out as National Champs."
