Climate Can't Phase the Pomeroys; SMWC Hands Penn State-Beaver an "L"

DUBOIS, Pa. -  Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball defeated Penn State-Beaver this afternoon in a "battle of the fittest" like contest taking on a very rainy and cold climate. The game was stopped four times due to inclement weather but the Pomeroys were able to rally when needed and earn the First Round victory!

USCAA Small College World Series Game 1 | vs. Penn State-Beaver

#5 SMWC Softball (20-9), snagged the lead late in the contest to take an 8-3 win over #4 Penn State-Beaver. The Pomeroys opened up scoring the first run as Katelynn Kennedy singled to score Hollie Jones from second base. Jones reached on a stand-up double after the first weather stoppage. In the top of the fourth inning, Nicole Niespodziany smashed a single to right field which would score Kindra Gingerich to tie the ball game 3-3. Gingerich would later triple off the fence to push two more runs across the plate to take a 6-3 lead. After Taylor Andrew threw two tough innings for SMWC and finished the game with two strikeouts. Kennedy came in relief and pitched a gem as she struck out three batters and held Penn State-Beaver to no runs scored. Kennedy earned the win while Vanessa Jackson took the loss for Beaver. The Pomeroys tallied 13 hits on the game and defensively made no errors. Very impressive considering the field was layered with a sheet of water. Jones, Gingerich, and Kennedy each tallied multiple hits while Jones led the team.

Quote | Head Coach Mike Andrew

How he felt the team played given the weather and the starting and stopping of play...

"I think the girls did a nice job of overcoming a lot of elements, especially the weather it's very difficult to play when it's raining and having to stop every five or 10 minutes and then restart the game. But we pulled through, every girl that we put in came through and did a nice job of closing the door. Our offense did a nice job of hitting the ball when I needed to I think tomorrow will be a better day!"

Kennedy on getting the win today as the pitcher in the crazy climate...

"The weather out there today was really rough but I'm so proud of the team for continuing to play great and battling through it! Let's get another W tomorrow!"

Quote | Kindra Gingerich

Gingerich on her big triple which notched two RBI's to take a 6-3 lead vs. Beaver...

"It was a pretty close game and the momentum was kind of back and forth especially with the rain delays. I just went up to the plate with the mentality of 'why can't I get a big hit?' And just trusted me. The game ended up a big team win! Now we set our sights on tomorrow!"

Who's Next?

The Woods will battle the winner of tonight's game between #1 Cleary University and #8 Judson College tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. EST. Likely, SMWC will see Cleary University which will serve as a rematch of the 2018 USCAA National Championship game.
