VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) women's soccer team lost to Bryant & Stratton-Syracuse this afternoon in the first match of the 2019 USCAA National Tournament. The Woods fought through harsh winds and injuries to stay competitive throughout, but couldn't pull off the upset. They will be back in action tomorrow for their second match against Florida National University at 10:00 a.m. ET.
How It Happened
While Bryant & Stratton set the tone early, it was SMWC's defense that was able to keep their offensive attack in check. Bryant & Stratton was able to score the opening goal in the 25' but then the Pomeroy's defense was able to clear some dangerous balls throughout most of the first half. Bryant & Stratton was able to break through again first before the half.
Opportunities came fast and often for Bryant & Stratton coming out of the half, but once again the Woods' defense was able to frustrate and hold them at bay. With just a two-goal deficit, the Pomeroys felt right in the thick of the match, looking for an opportunity to take some shots of their own. Those shots never appeared and Bryant & Stratton put the match away with their third goal in the 76'. SMWC would fall 3-0 in their first match of the tournament.
The women's team is back in action again tomorrow morning, November 9th, when they face Florida National University at 10:00 a.m. ET.
