VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) women's soccer lost to Florida National University today 2-0 in Day 2 of the USCAA Women's Soccer Championships. The Pomeroys took their second loss in Pool Play which served as their final game of the 2019 season. The women's team concludes the 2019 season with an overall record of 7-8-1 (.469).

Despite the losses at the USCAA Nationals, it does not take away from what the team was able to accomplish this season. Holding a 1-12-1 overall record last season, the Pomeroys went above and beyond this year qualifying for the National Tournament.

How It Happened

SMWC and FNU were scoreless at halftime of the contest. FNU was able to tally the first goal five minutes into the second half. They netted their second goal in the 87th minute to pad the lead 2-0. The final goal eliminated SMWC's attempt for a comeback.

The Pomeroys gave up 19 shots today with 11 coming on goal, SMWC was only able to take a total of two shots on goal. Corre Matherly saw the full 90 minutes guarding the net, she finished with nine saves.

Quote | Head Coach Craig Hendry

"This was a fantastic experience. Although we didn't progress, our young women, with their efforts against strong opponents, were a credit to their families and the school. I believe this trip elevates our program and the school profile. This group has raised the bar for Pomeroy soccer, and our goal is to raise it further."
