SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College volleyball team fell to Franklin College on Tuesday night in the Knoerle Center, 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 21-25, 18-25) The Pomeroys are now 8-7 overall.
Junior Jessica Coombs led SMWC with 14 kills, while junior Brylie Riddell added nine and freshman Autum Loughead added eight. Four players recorded double-digit digs in freshman Madeline Howes with 27, Riddell with 20, freshman McKenzi Kumpf with 12 and Coombs with 11. Loughead also added two block assists to go with her eight kills.
All four sets were highly contested with SMWC taking set one, 25-23. The Pomeroys were led by Kumpf in the first set, who recorded five kills, while Riddell added three. The second set saw FC jump out to a 6-3 lead before SMWC tied things up at 11. The Pomeroys though were unable to gain control as they fell, 25-18.
The third set again saw FC jump out to an early lead, however, SMWC again was able to come back and tie things up at 12 this time and then again at 17 and 19. With the score 20-20, the Pomeroys were then outscored 5-1 in the final stretch. The fourth and final set again saw both sides exchange blows and end up tied at 10-10 before FC would slowly go on to a 25-18 victory.
The Pomeroys will be back in action on October 3, when they head to Berea to face Berea and Wilmington in a tri-match.
